Glass manufacture has had an important and integral role in the development of domestic lighting over the past three hundred years. Initially clear glass was used in early candle chandeliers and lamps in the eighteenth century. During the following century the advent of oil lamps produced a great surge in the variety of designs for shades and the colours available. With the rapid growth of gas lighting in the middle of the nineteenth century the glass makers started to extend their range of shades with etched decoration and more colours.
The next major innovation in the history of domestic lighting was the advent of electrical fittings. The period 1890 to 1910 was a great competition between gas and electricity as sources for domestic lighting. Some changes in technology were to be reflected in necessary changes in the glass shades made over this period.
The introduction of electrical lighting coincided with the Art Nouveau period and many early electric lights are of this design, usually made in brass with the customer choosing either a natural or plated finish but some being made in oxidized copper. Customers also had the choice of fabric or glass for their shades, cranberry and Vaseline shades being very popular at this time. In America, at around this time, the producers of Tiffany’s lamps generated wonderful stained-glass shade in jewel-like colours. The mass production of fittings during the twenties and later led to the widespread use of moulded glass for both hanging and wall lights, and the amount of brass used in these designs was very much reduced.
Nowadays art glass lamps and crystal chandeliers made by Czech glass masters and designers have unique shapes, colours and light deflection.
Very long time ago there lived-were four brothers …
Such words can be the beginning of history of family of glass blowers Beranek. The clan it was based by Emanuel Beranek, by the grandfather of the today's owner of the company. Having returned per 1940 from the north of Bohemia - from village, famous from the glass-blowing workshops, in native Bohemian - Moravian uplands. Near small town Zdar nad Sazava Emanuel with brothers Biguslav, Joseph and Jindri have opened a small glass art - blowing workshop.
The first years were very heavy. They did not have not enough fuel for the small furnace, and the necessary raw material was brought by scanty parties. Pieces, splinters of glass did not thaw in an oven, quickly cooling down, glass was full of bubbles. Then Beranek has made this lack advantage and necessity and has borrowed in manufacture which has named Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) (former Czechoslovakia Republic) antiquarian glass. Emanuel Beranek from the glass blower became the antique dealer working in similar primitive conditions.
In the memoirs it describes early years: “We have begun that have named antiquarian glass which was easy for receiving even before war. After war we again began to make it and soon it has drawn to itself attention: at exhibitions in Stockholm and Zurich in 1947 the glass Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) made manually has been recognized by the best in rigid international competitions”.
After a successful course of communists and nationalization of the property in 1949 plans concerning manufacture of glass Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) have stopped the existence. Fortunately, there were those who approves, that glass manufacture should proceed as a workplace of manual hot formation of glass without an impurity of any land.
Under a vigilant eye of the father two most important figures in development of the Czech glass art - Jindri and Jan Beranek were trained. Jindri worked there up to 1957, has then moved to workshop Hrjibska which has replaced in 1969 with opening of studio of glass in Austria with Bed Tatmansodorf of which cares about this day. Jan has remained in glass workshop Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) which any more did not belong to its family, setting rate the highly skilled skill and a wide range of design decisions of 39 years without days off. Among the most successful design works – carelessly generated glass figures and a collection made with use of special techniques.
Its talent as masters and the artist is perfectly reflected in carrying out various symposiums on the art glass, spent in Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) since 1970. Jan did some masters - classes and individual displays also spent, some of its works have been presented at the international exhibition of Czechoslovak glass. And though Jan Beranek now enjoys the deserved retirement, it still now likes to work with glass: it has attached a small workshop to the house where is engaged in the new project mainly for bohemian crystal glass art.
In the beginning of 1992 in Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) greater changes according to the law about properties have begun: the company again became the property of its lawful owners and founders - Beranek family. On January, 1st 1992 the youngest member of family, 32 years old Vlastimil Beranek became director of the firm based by its grandfather. Vlastimil has left high school applied arts in Brno where specialized on a sculpture, subsequently worked as the sculptor on a stone. Then has acted in Academy of applied arts in Prague where it was trained in studio of glass of professors Stanislav Libenski and Jaroslav Svobody. Vlastimil and its father Jan Beranek are now in the chapter of the company. “We wish to adhere to glass-blowing traditions” - has told Vlastimil. “Our company was known for high quality glass production with thin accents in design. Artists always welcome guests in Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic). These are some of them working for us, have formed married couples. We would like to make crystal glass art accessible more to the broad audience of a society, to do its equally attractive and functional. But we also wish to be attractive to admirers of perfection of forms, unique design, and modern “know-how”. That is why we make a part of products in the limited quantity, in series accompanied by certificates. This one of proofs of originality of work given by us”.
Masterful Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) are outstanding representatives of the phenomenon named all over the world “the Czech glass” or “Bohemian crystal glass”. 60 percent of production of the company is exported; permanent missions are opened in France, Holland, Spain, England, Singapore, Japan, Australia, the USA and Canada. Except for all aforesaid, workshops Skrdlovice (former Czechoslovakia Republic) is also a symbol of that understand as family traditions.

Czech glass art from Bohemia region received its world-wide fame due to its high quality of production, unique design, harmony of beauty and graceful performance. Czech bohemian crystal glass is glass standard all over the world. Its history begins in medieval times, when monasteries of Benedict's, who held the craftsmanship of glass-painting and created stained-glass windows which were used for the decoration of the main Gothic buildings. In medieval glass workshops - monks created colorful and clear glass mass used for the production of wide assortment of calicoes, goblets, bowls, and special wine bottles, various crystal glass arts.
First glass workshops were founded in Severochesky lands near Luzicky Mountains Borskoshepovsko, where glass art masters used ancient techniques of glass production and design, kept from the times of ancient states of Asia and Egypt. There, in Egypt and Syria main technologies of decorative glass design were developed. In 16th century they were brought on Czech territory by Venetians. Czech masters admired the beauty of Venetian glass and tried to reach the same perfection. In 16-17th century’s Czech lands under the rule of King Rudolf the II started to attract huge number of painters, glass and stone engravers, and grinders from the whole Europe. This era granted Czech Republic with best traditions of glass production and made it possible to create glass that was similar in its features to rock crystal. Since then transparent but strong Czech glass is called “Czech crystal” or “Bohemian Crystal Glass”.
Thanks to the efforts of Czech glass art master, mainly of Fridrich Egermann, the development of glass production received its rapid rise in 18-19th centuries. During those times many glass production centers such as: Bor, Jablonec and Nisou, Zelezny Brod, Kamenicky Ksenov were founded, to begin their history, that continues in our days.
Modern Czech crystal glass is the result of the demanding handwork of glass masters together with painters and designers. Its wide assortment delights buyers with beautiful glass art vases, crystal sculptures, bohemia crystal chandeliers, unique interior accessories and exclusive handmade items, and some new trends like crystal glass nail files.
